Today, in 1799, was a sad day. The father of our country and first president, George Washington passed away at his home in Mount Vernon, Virginia on this day. When you plan your visit to Mount Vernon, plan on stopping to visit Washington's tomb, the final resting place for our first president, Martha Washington, and other family members.
